All people have minds, but why are some people more successful than others? Is it luck, hard work, or mindset? Mindset is critical in all aspects of life because the way people set their mind determines how successful they will be. As Napoleon Hill said, “What the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve.”
Napoleon Hill is one of the greatest American authors in the genre of personal success who believed that success comes from what the mind thinks. According to Sabin (2020), 80% of success is a mindset, and that, hence, raises the question of whether mindset determines success.
Most successful people cannot give a speech or talk about their success without talking about mindset. Therefore, this article explains the mindset of high performing individuals and why they are successful.
Shape Your Success
According to the study conducted by Zingoni & Corey (2017) in the journal of personnel psychology, it was found that people have different mindsets that can shape their success. The authors in this journal argued that people with incremental minds, that is, those who believe that human attributes can be changed through hard work and effort, are likely to be more successful than those with a fixed mind.
Incremental Mindset vs Fixed Mindset
In their study, Zingoni & Corey (2017) found that employees with incremental minds had higher job performance. The study also found that managers with incremental minds were successful because they were willing to implement change and bring new ideas on board. A similar finding was obtained in the study conducted by Alvaro et al. (2019) in a study to determine the impact of growth and fixed mindset on students’ performance. This study found that students with growth or incremental mindset performed better than those with a fixed mindset.
In conclusion, mindset is critical in determining the success of an individual. High performing individuals have incremental minds that enable them to try new ideas and make decisions without fear of risk compared to less performing individuals. However, there is a need for more research in this area because other factors such as motivation also play a crucial role in determining an individual’s success.
